Community speaks up on proposal for old Carraway Hospital

Posted: Updated:

Birmingham community members speak out Monday on proposals to use the old Carraway Hospital campus for mixed use development instead of the Social Security Building.

Councilman William Parker held a community forum at the Norwood Community Center. Parker is pushing for the Carraway option. He took questions from citizens regarding the proposal.

Citizens asked about costs projections. They also talked about the revitalization that would occur in north Birmingham if the Carraway option is used.

Some Birmingham City Councilors as well as Mayor William Bell have been criticized in recent weeks for considering the Social Security Building option. State records show some city leaders accepted campaign donations from a PAC supported by a developer who also owns the Social Security Building.

Some councilors tell ABC 33/40 campaign donations don't determine their votes. The city spokesperson says there have been no formal proposal on the table yet regarding the Social Security Building.

The LoveLady Center owns the old Carraway Hospital. An official with the company tells ABC 33/40 several developers are interested in buying the property and there are plans to sell it by summer.
