Seniors opt out of jury duty with proposed bill

Posted: Updated:

An Alabama lawmaker has proposed legislation to allow people older than 70 to withdraw from jury pools.
Rep. Rod Scott, a Fairfield Democrat, says the bill is in consideration of many seniors who have trouble making it to court.  Circuit Court Administrator Rob Sachar says his office receives numerous phone calls from nursing homes and care providers asking about the legal ramifications if they don't make it to jury duty.
Nonetheless, some lawmakers say the legislation could have a negative impact in smaller counties. While others say some defendants could lose the ability to have their case heard by a jury of peers.
The proposed bill would allow seniors to reinstate themselves if they wished. The House Judiciary Committee has already discussed the bill.
