Fatal fire victim believed to have lived in school bus

Posted: Updated:

A fatal overnight fire claimed the life of one in Tuscaloosa County, and investigators believe the victim is a 79-year-old man who lived in a school bus.

"He was definitely unique," said neighbor Lynn LaFoy. "He wasn't about the frills of this world."

The blaze began around midnight on the 12000 block of Lock 15 Road. When the fire was extinguished, a body was discovered in an addition next to the bus.

"At this time, we are operating as if it is the 79-year-old resident," said Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit's Sgt. Dale Phillips.

LaFoy said her neighbor bought a trailer. It went up in flames, so he bought a bus.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but no foul play is expected. Investigators said preliminary reports from the State Fire Marshal's Office point to the possibility of a mechanical problem.

The victim's name has not been released.
