TRUSSVILLE - AL -

Jefferson county deputies have arrested a 17-year-old  after a fire Wednesday at Clay-Chalkville High School in Trussville.

Before Noon on Wednesday, deputies were called to the school on a report of a fire in the restroom. A custodian was transported to an area hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. A teacher was treated on the scene and students were evacuated as a precaution. A toilet paper dispenser had been set on fire causing smoke damage to the restroom. Investigators say a male teenager was seen on surveillance footage entering and leaving the restroom before the fire was discovered. Deputies identified the student and took him into custody. He admitted to starting the fire, telling deputies he did it because he wanted to see what would happen. He also said that after starting the fire, he flushed the lighter down the toilet.

The student was charged with arson first degree and transported to the Jefferson County Youth Detention Facility. The name of the student is being held because of his age.
