EPA begins soil excavation in north Birmingham

Posted: Updated:

Crews with the Environmental Protection Agency began removing contaminated dirt from properties in north Birmingham Wednesday.

ABC 33/40 was the only news crew on the site as excavation began at a church.

The agency is removing dirt, which contains hazardous levels of arsenic, lead and other materials, from about 50 properties in the Collegeville, Harriman Park and Fairmont neighborhoods. The process is expected to last at least through September.

Before crews remove dirt, they must also receive approval from property owners because the process also includes moving trees, fences and other hindrances.
