The Birmingham Area Marfan Community Group hosts its second annual "Cooking from the Heart!" fundraiser on Friday, February 21, 2014, from 6-8 pm at the Holy Infant of Prague Catholic Church (8090 Gadsden Highway, in Trussville). Part of the proceeds from the event are earmarked for a scholarship fund that enables a local family affected by Marfan or a related disorder to attend The Marfan Foundation's annual family conference each year. The remaining funds go directly to The Marfan Foundation for its education, research, and patient support programs and services.
Amber Harbison, leader of the Birmingham Area Marfan Community Group, is passionate about supporting the Foundation because both her husband and her daughter are affected with Marfan syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition that affects the body's connective tissue. She started the local support group last year so her family could share experiences and gain information with other local families who are also affected with these conditions. She is equally committed to sending a local family to the Foundation's annual conference.
The Birmingham Area Marfan Community Group invites the public to stop by the event and enjoy light appetizers and desserts from the "Cooking from the Heart!" cookbook, which is available for purchase. There will also be door prizes, glitter tattoos, balloon animals, and more.
The event is free, but donations are appreciated. The first 50 people who donate $50 or more receive a free t-shirt. For those unable to attend, a tax deductible donation can be made at www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/cookingfromtheheart.
