TALLADEGA COUNTY - AL -

One man is missing and another is injured after a racing boat wreck on "Lay Lake" in Talladega County. It happened about 2:00 Tuesday afternoon near Childersburg. As night fell, the search had to be postponed until the morning.

Search and rescue crews wrapped up their search for the missing boater tonight - the search will continue Wednesday morning. It happened near River Run Road off Highway 280 near Childersburg.
.
Childersburg Fire crews were able to rescue one of the boaters - who swam to a small island in the middle of the water.  He was transported to UAB with non life threatening injuries.

"We had a fisherman that brought the boat out," Captain Tim Shelnutt, Childersburg Fire and Rescue said. "I got my EMT's and took them to the island where he had swam to. They got him in the boat and brought him to us."

Firefighters were able to get parts of the boat out of the water - the fuel cell, the head rest and the engine cover. They also found life jackets - floating near the wreck site.

"It looked bad," Shelnutt said. "We've got someone missing so it was bad. This is my first boating accident that the boat was broken up that bad."

Rescuers say the boat was an RPM Redline - used for racing. Rescue crews say it was traveling at a very high rate of speed.

The search will continue tomorrow morning. Quite a few agencies are involved - including the Alabama Marine Police. The identities of the men have not yet been released.
