Birmingham police: Good Samaritan struck, killed while helping to remove ladder on I-59 South

Posted: Updated:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A Good Samaritan who had just helped a stranger retrieve a ladder from a southbound lane of Interstate 59 was struck and killed Tuesday, Birmingham police said.

The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. near Oporto Madrid Boulevard after a ladder fell off a truck and onto the road. A passing motorist stopped and helped the driver of the truck retrieve the ladder and shortly after placing it back on the truck, the victim was hit by an oncoming vehicle in the "fast lane" of the interstate, Lt. Sean Edwards said. The force of the impact sent the Good Samaritan into the air before landing near the center lane, where another vehicle struck the victim.

Rescue crews were called to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased. The identity of the person killed hasn't been released.

Following the incident, police are urging motorists and pedestrians to not attempt to remove debris from the road, rather, they ask that you call Alabama State Troopers or ASAP for assistance.
