Since last week's fatal fire at the condemned and abandoned Old Adams Inn in downtown Birmingham last week, police have been monitoring the eyesore around the clock and will continue to do so until it's demolished.

The hotel, which is located a stone's throw away from I-65 South on 3rd Avenue North, has long been a source of trouble for the city, specifically for firefighters, who have extinguished multiple fires at the building since 2009. The latest incident occurred Feb. 7 when an early-morning, second-floor blaze broke out, killing a man and sparking decision-makers to expedite plans to rid the city of the public nuisance for good.

The city council allotted $750,000 for the demolition of the hotel in November 2013 and bidding for the job was set to end Friday. The company with the winning bid will be expected to begin work next week.

Until then, officers will remain on non-stop security detail at the property.
