An Oneonta snow day

Posted: Updated:
ONEONTA - AL -

Sunshine and warmer temperatures are nice. But for 4,200 people in east Alabama, power would be better.

Alabama Power crews have restored power to more than 28,000 customers in the northern district.

But, Blount County was especially hard hit. As of late Thursday afternoon there are nearly 1,300 customers in Oneonta still waiting for the power to return.

However, that didn't stop some from finding a bright spot on this latest "snow day."

For Owen Blakely, the best part of this day: "Sledding!"

John Blakely cherishes quality time with his son.

"It's a very enjoyable day away from work, just having fun with the kids and the family," he says.

In addition to schools being closed, many businesses decided to take a snow day too.

Nearly four inches of snow fell in Oneonta.

This morning, Highway 231 still had accumulation in places, but the sun helped melt away the white blanket.

With the worst over, it was time to enjoy the best of the winter storm and begin a return to reality.

"It appears that (residents) are going from building snowmen to trying to get the snow off their vehicles so they can get out on the road. Now that it's melted off the primary and secondary roads," says Oneonta police chief James Chapman.

For the Blakely family, they were intent on making every snow moment count.

"It's some very good quality time, just having a good time playing, and sliding and throwing snowballs."
