Free financial aid workshops for high school seniors

Posted: Updated:

High school seniors throughout Central Alabama can attend free workshops to get help filling out the paperwork needed to obtain financial assistance for college.  The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) workshops will be hosted by Alabama Possible's 'Blueprints College Access Initiative'.

The (FAFSA) is required for students to receive federal and state grants, loans, and scholarships at most two- and four-year institutions. High school seniors are invited to work with financial aid counselors to complete their FAFSA application at the free workshops being organized across Central Alabama.

Alabama Possible and Blueprints are partnering with the Alabama State Department of Education, University of Montevallo and Birmingham-Southern College to organize The FAFSA workshops. Blueprints is a statewide program that matches current college students with high school students from low-income families.

According to the executive director of Alabama Possible, Kristina Scott, every year tens of thousand of families in Alabama miss the deadline to get the maximum benefits of filing the FAFSA.

"Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the first step in learning about student aid that is available to help finance college expenses," said Kristina Scott.

Last year, 100 percent of students who completed a FAFSA form at a Blueprints' workshop qualified for Pell Grants. According to the U.S. Department of Education, nine out of ten students who file a FAFSA attend a two- or four-year college that fall.
