The New Orleans Saints have released safety Roman Harper.

It's a cost cutting move by the team, who needs to cut at least $12 million to get under the projected NFL salary cap. Harper was scheduled to make $3.2 million in 2014 and $3.5 million in 2015.

The former Crimson Tide star has been a starter for most of his seven year career, all of which has been spent with the Saints.

Harper was selected out of Alabama in the second round of the 2006 NFL draft. He's started 104-of-108 games and recorded 17 sacks, seven interceptions, 54 pass deflections, 15 forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 654 tackles in his career.

Harper was a key member of the team that won Super Bowl XLIV and referenced the franchise's only championship on twitter on Wednesday.

"To the city of New Orleans and it's fans...THANK YOU for the 8 years of #GreatMemories #WHODAT #SBXLIVCHAMPS"

Harper was one of four defensive players released by the Saints on Wednesday. New Orleans also cut defensive back Jabari Greer, defensive end Will Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma.
