HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- A winter storm that has been dumping a wintry mix in north Alabama since late Monday night has left icy and hazardous road conditions, state troopers said.

According to Trooper Curtis Summerville, major and secondary roadways are experiencing "'widespread icing problems" and there have been dozens of reports of motorists in need of assistance, specifically in Cullman County and surrounding areas along Interstate 65.

Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) crews are continuing efforts to treat affected roads, though, Summerville said travels issues continue.

"We are encouraging motorists to drive with caution or to remain off the roadways if possible," Summerville said. "Motorists are encouraged to monitor local news for information on weather and road conditions and to call the state troopers office only in case of emergency."

Drivers can report an accident or other emergencies to state troopers by dialing *HP on their cellular devices.
