Many people had to find different ways to stay warm in Cullman.

Thousands of people spent hours without electricity after a transformer went out at the North Cullman substation.

Exit 310 in Cullman looked like a ghost town Saturday afternoon. Business after business.. empty.. this gas station even locked.

"Cracker Barrel is out of power, Ruby Tuesday, Logans, Waffle House, all these places over here are out of hour."

Samantha Quinney says power went out at Denny's around 12:30 p.m. and customers had to be turned away. But she remained optimistic.

Quinney says, "Not making any money right now, but what can yo do when the power is out. can't really do much."

Diana Fowler worked in the dark for several hours at the Maple Ridge Gun Club. Thankfully there was a fireplace. "I was able to out to the shooting area for a little bit where it was cold. If I hadn't had the fireplace to come back to, I probably wouldn't have gone."

"Fix the infrastructure please!"

That was Ruth Isay-Radvillas plea earlier in the day with no heat. She and her husband bundled up for more than 4-hours.

"Everything we have runs on electricity, so it's blankets, coats and clothes."

A spokesperson for the Cullman Electric Cooporative says power was out because of an equipment failure at the North Cullman substation and crews were able to restore all power around six o'clock.

Despite the chilly day, some say it could have been worse.

Quinney says, "This day has been a lot warmer than the last few weeks for us."

According to the Cullman County EMA, when the transformer went out it cut off power to six small sub-stations.

It monitored the situation until all the power was back on just to make sure assistance wasn't needed.
