Bobby Humphrey to host showcase for unsigned senior prospects

Posted: Updated:

Bobby Humphrey wants to give every high school football player a shot at the college game.

The former Alabama and NFL star has organized a combine to showcase unsigned senior football players.

The one-day event is Saturday at Old Berry High School off Columbiana Road in Hoover. Humphrey says he expects 9-10 college coaches to be in attendance.

"My goal is to get some kids signed," Humphrey on WJOX's "Opening Drive" radio show. "A few of the schools that will be there are Tuskegee, North Alabama, West Alabama, West Georgia and Miles College that is local here."

Humphrey motivation is obvious. When says he was primarily unnoticed when he attended Glynn High School in the early-80s.

He says a parent at a rival school was the reason he got his college opportunity.

"(At) Glynn High School we didn't win very many football games," Humphrey said on the radio show. "No college scouts were coming to watch us play. When we went to Walker and played them we got beat maybe 45-14. In that particular ball game, I rushed for a lot of yards and I ran a 75-yard touchdown on a screen play. We got called for holding. They brought it back and marked it off 10 yards and we ran the same play and I ran that one for a touchdown."

Humphrey says a fan at the game called Alabama to tell them about the kid at Glynn High School.

"I would have been one of those kids who didn't get an opportunity because of where I played."

Saturday's prospect camp begins at 10 a.m. with registration and weigh-in. Drill testing begins at noon.
