Ambulance involved in accident with Birmingham public works vehicle while transporting infant to Children's of Alabama

Posted: Updated:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Two people were injured in an accident Friday morning after a public works vehicle collided with a Birmingham Fire and Rescue unit, which was transporting a three-month-old girl to Children's of Alabama Hospital.

Shortly after 7 a.m., authorities responded to the 200 block of Roosevelt Courtway, where little Lamaria Morrow was found unresponsive and not breathing. Emergency workers loaded the victim in an ambulance and were en route to the hospital when their vehicle was involved in a crash on 6th Avenue South.

The accident, which sent both drivers to the hospital with minor injuries, forced crews to call for an additional emergency vehicle to complete the transport of the infant, who later died shortly after arriving at the hospital. While the cause of her death hasn't been released, police said the accident didn't play a role and no foul play is suspected.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
