Cordova residents anxious for new town grocery store

CORDOVA - AL -

It's a lot more than dirt and gravel.

"It's wonderful," Steve Ostaseski said. "For the city, it's fantastic."

It's a project that has been years in the making.

"Wheels have been in motion since April 28, 2011," Ostaseski said.

Almost three years ago when a tornado ripped through Cordova the town lost everything. The fire station, the police department, city hall and the town's grocery store.

Ostaseski, who is the recovery manager for Cordova, says bringing back the heart of the town was a must.

"One of the most important factors that everyone pointed to was they needed a grocery store," he said. "They needed it back."

And now Cordova is getting it back.

The new 9,500 square feet project, valued at about $1.6 million is being paid for through disaster recovery funds.

"Not wanting to count the chickens until the eggs are in the Piggly Wiggly," Yvonne Traweek said.

Traweek, with Jeff and Von's Place restaurant, couldn't be happier for the new store. She just doesn't want to see it fall through.

But the recent construction, she says, is a good sign.

"When they brought in the equipment the other day, we were all standing on the porch just watching them unload the equipment," she said. "It's a very big deal."

Civicon, LLC is responsible for clearing off the property and Wyatt General Contracting will be building the new store.

When the doors open Traweek says she will be there, with the rest of the town, celebrating.
