Dwight Gooden to be part of Rickwood Classic celebration

Posted: Updated:

Former Cy Young winner Dwight Gooden will be the guest of honor at the 19th annual Rickwood Classic.

Gooden will be the special guest of the Birmingham Barons for their 'throw-back' game with the Mississippi Braves at Rickwood Field. Gooden is a four time All-Star and a three time World Series Champion.

He won the 1984 National League Rookie of the Year award and the 1985 NL Cy Young award. Gooden was only 20 when he won the Cy Young and remains the youngest recipient in history.

Gooden had a 15 year Major League career, which began with the New York Mets. He also pitched for the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays. Gooden won World Series titles with the Mets (1986) and two with the Yankees (1996, 2000).

The Birmingham Barons will host the Mississippi Braves at Rickwood Field on June 25. The theme of this year's Rickwood Classic is the 'Roaring Twenties'. The Barons captured two Southern Association titles during the decade, playing at Rickwood Field. The team drew 160,000 fans or more eight times during that 10 year stretch.
