Triple fatal crash renews questions about Fayette intersection

FAYETTE - AL -

A triple fatal crash in Fayette has renewed questions about the dangers of Highway 171 near the Walmart SuperCenter.

"I couldn't take it. I was just shaking," said Mesosha Johnson.  She was at Fayette County High School Monday when she found out her best friend, Hannah and here mother Latisha died in a car accident Sunday night.  "We talk. We worked together,"Johnson added.

Both vehicles were mangled.  Police believe 28 year old Timothy Gallups, was driving "under the influence" when his PickUp truck crossed from the Northbound side of 171 and hit the Terries vehicle head on.  Police Chief Danny Jenkins says, "hopefully, we'll have a preliminary report in a couple of weeks but that's we're expecting it show that alcohol was involved." "

The accident really frustrates people who believe the intersection is dangerous regardless because nothing controls traffic leaving the nearby Walmart.

"Too many people have gotten killed there. There needs to be red light," said Christi Johnson.  She's Moesha's mother and was also a friend of Hannah's mother Latisha.  She has also complained about the highway. "Yes, its bad its constantly speeding through here."

Chief Jenkins says he's heard many of the complains.  He plans to partner with the Alabama Department of Transportation to study the area.  But, Jenkins says in many of the recent accidents traffic controls wouldn't have necessarily prevented the crash. "We have had a couple of other accidents that have resulted in fatalities there. But, as it stands now -- there's nothing to indicated the roadway played any part in this. This was simply a vehicle on the wrong side of the road."

Friends and family of Hannah and Latisha Terry will say goodbye Thursday at 2pm.  The funeral will be held Nelson's Funeral.  There is also a viewing Wednesday 6-to-8 pm.
