MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. -- While students and teachers continued their impromptu, winter-weather holiday away from school Thursday, some employees at Mountain Brook Elementary School were cleaning up the mess left behind by a busted fire sprinkler pipe.

According to the school, a water pipe broke around 3 p.m. and a continuous rush of water proceeded to flood at least four classroom for nearly 45 minutes before workers were finally able to stop the leak.

In the aftermath, the affected classrooms were littered with soggy, broken ceiling tiles, and large puddles of water covered the floor. The janitorial staff will spend Friday and likely much of the weekend cleaning up the mess. They won't have to work around students or faculty as the school will remain closed until next week due to hazardous road conditions in the city caused by Tuesday's winter storm.

It is unknown at this time what caused the pipe to burst, but it is believed to be related to the freezing low temperatures over the last couple of days.
