Update:

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office reported Wednesday night that the remaining 63 students still stranded at area schools have been reunited with their families.

Below is the statement from the sheriff's office sent in a release:

"The Sheriffs Office is happy to report that All Jefferson County Students that were stranded in schools along with a special needs student from the Burkett Learning Center in Morris have been safely reunited with their families without incident. Deputies used four wheel drive vehicles and vehicles with snow chains to execute the transports."

----

After around 1,000 students at 25 Jefferson County schools became stranded in Tuesday's winter storm, the sheriff's office has continued its tireless efforts to reunite children with their parents, and as of Wednesday afternoon, the number had dwindled down to just 63.

According to a release, 40 students remain stuck at Clay-Chalkville Middle School, 15 at Gresham Elementary, seven at Clay Elementary and one at Erwin Middle., though, Chief Deputy Randy Christians say all of the students should be safely returned home by nightfall.

Sheriff's deputies and personnel have used 4-wheel-drive vehicles, as well as cars equipped with snow-chain tires, to transport students to their homes or other drop-off locations, where families waited with welcome arms.

Parents also pitched in as road conditions improved enough in various locations to allow families to pick up their children.

ABC 33/40 reporter Sherrie Evans will have a full report on this story on the news at 10 p.m. To watch the newscast live online, click here.
