ABC 33/40 enlisted the service of its Airlink 3340 chopper on Wednesday to give its viewers an aerial look at the numerous traffic "nightmares" on area roads and interstates following a winter storm one day prior that caught most of central Alabama off-guard and unprepared.

The largest backup continues to be on Interstate 20 East beginning near the Moody exit, where four tractor trailers wrecked Tuesday afternoon, closing all eastbound lanes and causing traffic to back up for miles. The aerial video shows dozens of 18-wheelers lined up side-by-side, seemingly endlessly, behind the crash site with numerous wrecked and abandoned vehicles surrounding the stalled mass of trucks. It took nearly a day for St. Clair County EMA workers to clear the accident scene and it wasn't until 2 p.m. today that traffic began moving through the area, albeit, at a "stop-and-go" rate, according to Alabama State Troopers.

Another problematic area in Birmingham can be seen on Interstate 65 South near the Lakeshore Drive exit, where icy roads prevented motorists, including commercial truckers, from traveling uphill towards Alford Avenue. Several vehicles slid off the interstate and were later ditched by drivers as the road became impassable until this afternoon.

Just a few miles south of the aforementioned troublesome spot on I-65, motorists found travel nearly impossible on I-65 North in an area located a short distance past the Highway 31 exit. Thick sheets of ice and snow blanketed the stretch of interstate, sending oncoming drivers into the ditch.

In a span of 24 hours, five people died in traffic accidents related to the winter weather, state troopers said. The names of the victims were released today.
