BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A strong winter storm threw a wrench into thousands of Alabamians' travel plans Tuesday, including some Bluff Park Elementary School students who had their field trip to the McWane Science Center derailed by worsening weather conditions, ABC 33/40 reporter Sherrie Evans has learned.

According to a school spokesman, students were en route to the downtown Birmingham learning center when snowy weather forced the three buses carrying the children to make alternate plans. Two of the buses ended up at Shades Mountain Elementary School while the third bus became stranded on Interstate 65, where 30 students were later removed from the bus and taken to Children's of Alabama Hospital.

According to school and hospital officials, all of the affected students are "safe and warm" as they prepare to stay at their respective locations overnight.
