Shelters opening across Central Alabama

We have received word of a number of shelters opening up across the area.

Rocky Ridge Fire department has opened up a shelter at Lakeside Baptist on Old Rocky Ridge Road. For those who need help in Pelham, the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena has open for those seeking shelter. The civic complex is located at 500 Amphitheater Road. Warming stations have also opened at Munford Volunteer Fire Department in Munford. Students who are stranded at Jacksonville State University can go to Stephenson Hall, The Gamecock Diner and the Food Court at the Theron Montgomery Building.

Hours have been extended at the Boutwell Auditorium due to the extreme weather. The auditorium opened at 1 a.m. and will remain open until Thursday morning. First Baptist Church Lakeshore is also open and have warm coffee available for those who need it. K&M Auto on University Boulevard in downtown Birmingham is also available as a warming station.

The YMCA on Columbiana Road in Vestavia Hills has also opened as a warming station. In Walker County, New Generation Ministry in Jasper has opened.

    Police in Gadsden are trying to return hundreds of stolen items to their rightful owners. Captain Paul Cody said officers bust a large fencing operation this week. Joe Pearl, 75, is the suspect in the case. It took a long time to sort through and document a very wide range of stolen property. "We've collected a lot of stuff," Cody said. "Toilet paper.     Investigators in Gadsden said a man strangled his ex-girlfriend Tuesday evening before stabbing another man to death. Officers arrested 30-year-old William D'Angelo McKinney Wednesday night. He faces charges for murder and domestic violence with strangulation. Police said McKinney went to his ex-girlfriend's home in the Mill Village area and let himself in. Investigators said she asked him to leave, but he shoved her and then put her in a headlock until she blacked out.More >>
