MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama may be at risk of losing some of its federal prison funding if it doesn't respond to questions from the U.S. Department of Justice about sexual abuse. Federal officials sent letters to every governor last week asking if their state is complying with the Prison Rape Elimination Act.
CLANTON, Ala. (AP) - Leaders of a central Alabama animal shelter say winter weather has led to a large uptick in the number of stray animals being dropped off. Chilton County Humane Society director Jessica Terry says stray animals have been dropped off at the shelter almost daily after winter storms.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A state lawmaker has proposed legislation to allow people older than 70 to withdraw from jury pools. Fairfield Democrat Rep. Rod Scott says many seniors have trouble making it to court but some lawmakers say the legislation could pose problems in smaller counties.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama lawmakers are proposing a multitude of school prayer and religious expression bills this session. Republican Rep. Steve Hurst has proposed setting aside up to 15 minutes at the start of each school day to study the procedures of Congress, including having teachers give a verbatim reading of a congressional opening prayer.
