Changes may be on way for food labels

Posted: Updated:

Reading food labels can help you make healthy diet choices.

But sometimes understanding them can lead to more confusion than anything else.

The Food and Drug Administration says current food labels are outdated by more than 20 years and it's time for a makeover. The labels will likely become easier to read and use, but the exact changes are not clear yet. Some groups are asking for more emphasis to be placed on calorie and sugar counts. Others call for bolder and larger text sizes for the ingredients list.

And many people say it shouldn't take a lot a math to figure out. For example, when you're looking at serving size and calories per serving. The good news though, some studies show, people who at least take time to read the labels do end up making healthier food choices.

But we could expect some changes this year.
