"Bridge Inspectors will inspect the bridge girders to assess damage, in order to determine the extent of damage prior to reopening the travel lanes. These lane closures will be in effect until approximately 8 p.m., when the bridge inspection is completed.

"Motorists are requested to use Alternate Routes and to avoid this area, due to the extreme traffic congestion and traffic delays caused by these lane closures. Motorists are also requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Maintenance Operation to improve Alabama's roadways.

"ALDOT does not know what hit the bridge because the driver continued. This is an expensive fix, according to ALDOT and considered "leaving the scene of an accident."

"They want the public's help. If someone saw the accident, please call 205-581-5603.

"The state would normally bill the driver's insurance provider in such cases, but with no driver, the state will assume the cost."
