Update:

People who live Marks Village in Gate City could be moving soon.

That's according to a letter sent to residents from the Director of Facility Operations and Property Manager.

It's been a month since an explosion killed a woman and injured others, but some people say they still smell gas and are concerned.

Many residents are still living in fear. According to the letter, the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District has been told there are or may be more gas smells and leaks on the property and to protect residents, it will begin to move families.

Loretha Sharpe is ready to move out of Marks Village. "I don't sleep very well." She and others say they're concerned about smelling gas, a month after an apartment building exploded.

"Most of us are still terrified." Residents received this letter Saturday on their door from the Director of Facility Operations and the Property Manager. It warns about possible gas smells and leaks. Alagasco has been digging and making repairs throughout the site. But below the warning, a paragraph giving Sharpe and a neighbor some peace. "All of our transfers are approved. I said for real, she said yes. I said, oh, lord thank you. it makes me feel good they are going to do something."

The letter says all residents who've requested transfers are approved to move to another housing authority site where apartments are available. People on the section 8 waiting list were also told to contact the management office and other residents will be contacted.

Brenda Whetstone says, "Hoping they would come up with some kind of plan for us to get out of here safely without anything else coming up."

But with encouragement, comes some uncertainty. Jessica Gilbert says, "We just hope we don't move to a place we don't want to move to, like Kingston. Every place is going to have problems, some have more than others."

Jessica Gilbert also wondering, if help will be provided to make that move.

We could not reach the Housing Authority for a comment.

We did get a call from Alagasco Spokesperson, Sherri Goodman, on Sunday who says the area is safe. She says safety is the number one priority of the gas company and crews have been at Marks Village since the explosion assisting residents and helping them with their concerns.

She says Alagasco has decided to accelerate a cast iron replacement project at Marks Village based on results of a gas leak survey done earlier this month. The work will begin next week and end in March.
