Polar plunge for Special Olympics

A few dozen brave souls took the plunge this morning at Oak Mountain State Park.

The occasion, the 4th Annual Polar Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics. Those taking the plunge braved 45-degree water temperatures, only to run into 30-degree air temperatures upon exiting the frigid lake. 

The event was organized by the Law Enforcement Torch Run to fund and raise awareness for the Special Olympics. Birmingham Police Lt. Theo Smith says the group has been active in the state for almost 25 years.

The Special Olympics provides training and athletic competition for children and adults with disabilities.
