TechBits: Net Neutrality (1.15.14)

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

A federal appeals court has struck down FCC rules designed to ensure Internet Service Providers (ISPs) treat all your data and online activity equally.

Without the so-called 'Net Neutrality' rules, the way you connect online- and how you get charged for what you do online- could change.

ISPs could set up tiers of service- charging differently for casual web browsing, gaming, and streaming video online.  ISPs would also be able to slow down or possibly block access to sites offering products that compete with their own services.

The court says people can switch to other Internet providers in they're unhappy with their service- but for many people, that's not an option.  IN some areas, there's only one provider offering service.
