NORTHPORT - AL -

Danny Ray Smith was accused of driving under the influence in 2012 when he hit and killed an 8-year-old girl after an air show in Tuscaloosa.

In January 2014, he was arrested again for driving under the influence while out on bond for murder, vehicular homicide, manslaughter, assault, and leaving the scene of an accident in connection to the fatal DUI crash on March 31, 2012. Haylee Burks soon after died from injuries sustained in the wreck.

A circuit court judge revoked Smith's $110,000 bond for the latter charges. He remained in Tuscaloosa County Jail until he became ill and was taken to a hospital where he fell into a coma.

Smith owned Dixie Air and a construction company. He hosted a private party during the 2012 Tuscaloosa Regional Air Show before he hit a Chilton County mother and her two daughters as they walked in the grass along 5th Street in Northport.

Smith's blood alcohol level was .13 at the time of the crash, according to police reports. The legal limit in Alabama is .08.

Following Burks' death, her parents, who are divorced, filed two separate wrongful death lawsuits against Smith.

Smith died Monday in hospice care, according to his attorney. His cause of death is unknown.

Police in Gadsden are trying to return hundreds of stolen items to their rightful owners. Captain Paul Cody said officers bust a large fencing operation this week. Joe Pearl, 75, is the suspect in the case. It took a long time to sort through and document a very wide range of stolen property. "We've collected a lot of stuff," Cody said. "Toilet paper. We have non-firearms related weapons, we have karaoke machines, musical instruments, car stereos, underwear."More >>
