A solution to long car tag lines?

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Long car tag lines continue to frustrate many people in Jefferson County. One lawmaker has yet another idea about how to shorten them.

Representative Paul Demarco, (R) Homewood, is sponsoring a bill to allow cities to charge a five dollar fee for car tag renewals. The money would help individual cities offset the cost of processing tag renewals for its citizens. The hope is that it would help people avoid the long courthouse lines.

But at least one county commissioner says the problem of long lines could be solved if the county got that money.

"It hurts the county but if the county offered the same five dollar transaction, it can help us open up windows. We can open more satellite courthouses. 2.5 million could go a long way," said Commissioner Sandra Little Brown.

Brown says they would be able to bring more employees back.

The legislative session starts Tuesday.
