Planning and Zoning Commission meeting canceled, rescheduled Feb. 13

MCCALLA - AL -

"So far, there has not been much open communication between the residents and the developer," Lauren Trim said.

Trim wants to be part of the conversation.

She lives in McCalla just down the road from where a proposed low-income apartment complex might soon be placed. She fears it's going to cause some home values to decrease.

"The housing market isn't the best that it is right now," she said. "But, we put a lot of time and effort into making our community great and we've seen McCalla grow so much."

Some of those community members were at the Jefferson County Courthouse, Thursday, hoping to voice opposition at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, but it was canceled due to not enough commission members to make a quorum.

"We don't have the infrastructure in place for something of this magnitude," McAdory Fire Chief, Jeff Wyatt, said.

Wyatt isn't afraid of home value dropping. He's afraid of location, saying with the congestion on Eastern Valley Road, the traffic and the water supply, McAdory can't handle it.

"A sprinkler system would work in an apartment complex, but it would also create problems for any surrounding businesses around there because there's not enough water supply for major events," he said.

Meaning...if Wyatt's fire crew is on the scene of one major fire and another starts up - there might not be enough water.

"There's not enough water supply there for both of them," Wyatt said.

Wyatt and Trim say they're not against the idea...just take it elsewhere.

"I'm definitely not against that, just not in this location," Trim said.

"There's plenty of places in McCalla for something like this...just not at that one," Wyatt.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meeting has been rescheduled for February 13 at 1:00 p.m.
