Gadsden warming station extends hours because of natural gas outage

Posted: Updated:

A warming station in Etowah County is extending its hours because of extreme cold and the possibility of people needing somewhere to go because of a natural gas outage in Gadsden.

The Elliott Community Center will remain open Tuesday until 8:00 p.m.  If necessary, it will remain open overnight.

Alagasco customers in the downtown West Gadsden area experienced a natural gas outage overnight due to an unprecedented demand on a newly installed pipeline. Alagasco crews went door to door to inform customers of the situation and alert them that their meters would be turned off temporarily. Some 400 people were affected.

Crews are working throughout the day to restore service. Alagasco hopes all service will be restored by tonight.

Should the Elliott Community Center remain open overnight, anyone who goes there for shelter from the cold is asked to supply their own snacks, blankets and pillows.
