There is little change in our thinking concerning our weather for the next fours days. Rain showers this afternoon, briefly changing to light freezing rain and light snow before ending late tonight, and then a severe cold wave.

LONG DURATION PERIOD OF FREEZING WEATHER:

We will be below freezing for over 60 consecutive hours from tonight through midday Wednesday.

WINTRY PRECIPITATION TONIGHT:

As stated here many times over the last few days, the freezing rain/snow event tonight is no "big deal". The freezing/frozen precipitation will be light, and won't last long. Don't expect anything more than a dusting to 1/2 inch over the northern third of Alabama. Best chance of seeing anything really significant is across high terrain of Northeast Alabama.

FLASH FREEZE:

The issue is that temperatures will drop into the 20s in a very short amount of time after the Arctic front passes. Any standing water will turn to ice quickly, and patchy "black ice" will be a problem overnight into tomorrow morning.

TRAVEL TONIGHT:

While most roads will be dry, any moisture will be ice on roads and bridges, and you won't be able to see the icy patches in most cases. So, just be aware of the potential beginning tonight. I don't think the icy spots will be really widespread, but they will be out there.

TIMING:

Temperatures will drop rapidly below freezing over Northwest Alabama around 6:00 p.m... I-59 corridor around 8:00 p.m., and East Alabama by 10:00 p.m.

SEVERE COLD WAVE:

We will drop into the mid teens tomorrow, and with a north wind of 15-30 mph, the wind chill index will be as low as 10 degrees below zero. We will have a hard time getting out of the teens during the day, and the wind chill index will remain below zero much of the day. A few snow flurries or snow showers are possible in the colder air during the morning hours.

SCHOOL DELAYS:

See the ABC 33/40 site for school delays tomorrow (and in some cases, Tuesday and Wednesday) http://www.abc3340.com/story/20882504/school-closings-and-delays

TUESDAY:

The low Tuesday will be in the 5 to 10 degree range, and the wind chill index will still be below zero at daybreak. Despite a sunny sky we won't get past the mid 20s Tuesday.

WEDNESDAY:

Another very cold morning with a low between 10 and 15 degrees. We finally rise above freezing by midday Wednesday.

The blog should be back up shortly, with new updates there. http://www.alabamawx.com
