The victim of a fatal hunting accident last weekend in Sumter County has been identified.

Hunter Collier, 26, of Birmingham, was found unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound in a hunting blind Saturday morning before being taken to area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Doctors believe Collier died from a heart attack moments after being struck by a stray bullet in the left hip. The bullet reportedly hit a major artery, cutting off blood flow to his heart and ultimately causing his death.

Collier was a 2006 graduate of Briarwood Christian School and 2011 graduate of Auburn University.

Funeral plans have been scheduled for Wednesday at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. followed by a service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in honor of Hunter Collier.
