Alabama teacher resigns amid sex allegations

Posted: Updated:

RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Franklin County Board of Education members have accepted the resignation of a physical education teacher who is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.

The TimesDaily reports (http://bit.ly/1izdcGZ) that school board members accepted a resignation letter from Vina physical education teacher Sonny Tibbs at their meeting Thursday night. It wasn't known Friday whether Tibbs has an attorney.

Superintendent Gary Williams said the district has posted a job opening for his position and are looking to fill it within about a week.

Tibbs taught physical education and coached girls track at Vina High School. He was accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old girl. In November, he was charged with having sex with a student as a school employee.

Tibbs had been on paid leave since mid-November.
