Birmingham councilwoman wants to discuss BWWB bill with JeffCo lawmakers

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Another bill overhauling the Birmingham Water Works Board will be filed before the start of the 2014 Alabama Legislative Session. Before that happens, Birmingham Councilwoman Lashunda Scales wants to create "a continuing dialogue" about the issue.

Tuesday, the councilwoman plans on introducing a resolution. It states, "A Resolution requesting a meeting with the Jefferson County Legislative Delegation to establish a continuing dialogue to address the impending matter with the Water Works Board and to build a coalition to further strengthen our working relations during the 2014 Legislative Session."

The bill will be sponsored by Senator Jabo Waggoner, R- Vestavia Hills, and Representative Paul DeMarco, R- Homewood. It would set term limits and pay cap for the board. The bill would also call for a public hearing before any water rate increases and would create board seats for representatives outside of Birmingham.

Right now, the Birmingham City Council makes the appointments. DeMarco says only a third of the water customers live within the city limits and some reside in other counties.
