UPDATE: 3-alarm apartment fire damages more than a half dozen units

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM-AL -

A three alarm fire heavily damaged several units at the Uptown Apartment Complex in the 1500 block of 19th Street North Tuesday morning.

The Birmingham Fire Department received the call at 11:26a.m.   Crews fought the flames for more than an hour but have yet to say the fire is "under control."  There are no reports of any injuries as of 12:30p.m.

Four units were damaged by fire, and another four were damaged by water used to fight the blaze.  BFD said the cause hasn't been determined, and at this point, it's not clear which unit the fire started in.  Witnesses on the scene told ABC 33/40 they believe it started in an upstairs unit.

Mayor William Bell arrived on the scene about an hour after the fire started.  The Red Cross is also on scene to help residents who are displaced.

The story is still developing.  ABC 33/40 has multiple crews on the scene.  We'll have the very latest here and on the air beginning with Focus@4.
