Dozens in Gate City volunteered their time Monday to decorate a Christmas tree at the corner of Joppa and Kimberly Ave, where a gas explosion destroyed an apartment building last week, killing a 40-year-old Birmingham woman and injuring several others.

Volunteers hope the tree will serve as a symbol of hope for the housing community left rattled and fearful during a time of year that's supposed be filled with holiday spirit and cheer.

Several homeowners tell ABC 33/40 they want to move out of the area following the blast on Dec. 16 because they fear for their safety.

The NTSB continues to investigate what caused the explosion, but it hasn't released any new information in days, and a final determination could take anywhere from nine to 12 months.
