Drivers hit the road for the holidays

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Many people have decided to get behind the wheel this holiday season.

AAA projects nearly 30% of Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home between Saturday and January 1st. More than 90% of those travelers will be driving.

"I think that's due in large part to some of the frustrations of flying," says AAA Spokesperson Clay Ingram.

Air travel is expected to decrease this season. Spokesperson Toni Bast says the busiest time of the year for flyers is usually Thanksgiving.

But with the extra highway congestion due to holiday travel, speed becomes more dangerous. Ingram says allow plenty of space cushion, reduce speed and leave early.

"The volume of traffic is going to be big. Your margin of error is going to be smaller. Your reaction time is going to be less," says Ingram.
