Executions in US drop close to 20-year low

Posted: Updated:

A new report finds fewer people are being executed in the United States.

The report, by the non-profit Death Penalty Information Center, noted only 39 people were put to death in 2013.  No more executions are scheduled for this year.

This is only the second time in the past two decades that number of inmates executed was below 40.   The report says one of the reasons for the decrease in executions is that states are having trouble getting lethal injection drugs.   States have been left scrambling to find alternatives after some European-based manufacturers banned US prisons from using their drugs in executions.

Currently, 32 states have the death penalty.  Only nine conducted lethal injections this year.
