Leeds police identify suspect shot Monday by officer

Posted: Updated:
LEEDS, Ala. -

Friends of the man shot Monday by Leeds police said he is heavily sedated but was able to speak to his family Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators identified the suspect in a shooting and pursuit as 58-year-old Ronald Hunter.

Those close to Hunter said they were surprised to hear Hunter is accused of shooting a gun at an apartment complex Monday afternoon.

"We're all in shock about Pastor Hunter and what happened to him. Because he's known as a peacemaker," Debbie Howell Huntley said.

She is a close friend of Hunter's family, and said it is totally out of character for Hunter.

"For this to have happened, I'm praying for him and his family," she said.

Her niece attends Jesus Way Kingdom of God Apostolic Church, which Hunter founded.  Some of the other shop owners on the same street as Hunter's church refer to him as "preacher man."

Hunter's neighbor, Tim Weems, said he was surprised to see police surrounding Hunter's house Monday afternoon.

"I just had walked outside and police come running down and he had his gun drawn, and there were four or five them there and he told me to go in the house, I looked out and I said 'I don't know what's going on over there.  Something's happening.'," Weems said.

"Then I walked back out and I heard pow-pow-pow.  From there, the ambulance come up and got the guy and carried him to the hospital."

Weems said he was scared he might get shot, but is glad none of the police were hurt and that Hunter survived.

"He's a nice guy, a nice guy.  That whole family seems nice.  They don't ever cause no trouble or nothing," Weems said.

But the Leeds police chief said officers have had past interactions with Hunter.  Byron Jackson said Hunter caused some trouble again Monday at Marlee Villa Apartments.

"We received a call that several shots had been fired.  When my officers arrived, they were pointed out to a car, saying that is the offender," Jackson said.

The Leeds chief said Hunter drove away, and officers chased him to his house on Jackson Avenue.

"At that time, a gun was displayed in the direction of the officer, and the officer engaged and that's where we've come to," Jackson said.

Police called the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to take over, which is the standard procedure when an officer shoots at someone.

"Anytime you're waiting in a situation like that, five minutes feels like five hours," Jackson said.

"They were on the scene quickly and conducted themselves in a professional manner.  We sort of backed away and handed them the scene and let them do the investigation."

The officer who shot Hunter is on paid administrative leave until ABI completes its investigation.

Jackson said it is a difficult situation for officers.  He said they are doing as well as they can given the circumstances.
