Visually impaired student designs congressman's Christmas card

Posted: Updated:

Monday, an Alabama congressman celebrated what he considered a Christmas Miracle. Congressman Spencer Bachus selected artwork by a visually impaired student for his Christmas card.

Instead of the popular family photo, the congressman has sponsored an art contest for more than 20 years to select a design for his Christmas card. The art is created by visually impaired students. This year, the winning design was a reindeer painted by Hueytown High School Freshman Chris Thorn.

Thorn called the honor "cool" and said the design was inspired by his desire to go hunting.

Bachus says the experience of choosing a winner is emotional.

"It's a Christmas miracle. There is so much talent there hidden. This artwork brings it out," said Bachus.

Bachus recognized other young artists. Their work has graced the cover of his card for more than twenty years. He plans to continue the tradition for at least another year.
