Maurice Lee tried to get away from his killer, but he didn't make it. Someone took his life Wednesday, October 23.

Detectives need  to find that person and are calling on you for help. Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper has more.

"I'm Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper.

We know someone knows exactly who we are looking for. Now, it's a matter of getting some courage and making an anonymous call.

On the night of Wednesday, October 23, police went to the 900 block of 46th Street North. A car had struck a power pole. Maurice Lee was inside and told police he had been shot in the back of the head. That's when Lee was taken to UAB Hospital. He had to have brain surgery but never woke up.

Back at the scene, one witness saw a four-door white car stopped at a stop sign. The witness says Lee pulled up next to the white car in a gray Oldsmobile. Words were exchanged. Then, the suspect got upset and fired a shot at Lee. He tried to get away but hit the power pole.

So, maybe you know who was driving that Oldsmobile, or maybe you've known all along who did this. Either way, you're safe if you call Crime Stoppers.

Just dial 205-254-7777. We'll never ask your name, and Crime Stoppers cannot call you to court. Plus, the call is never recorded, and there is a cash reward.

Make the call for yourself, and for Maurice Lee.

With Crime Stoppers, I'm Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper."

In addition to telephone tips, you can text a tip by texting the code 7777, along with your tip, to the word CRIMES. Or, you can submit an encrypted tip by going to www.birminghamcrimestoppers.org and clicking on the "submit an online tip" link.

No matter which method you choose, you will remain anonymous.

The cash reward in this case is offered to the first person whose tip leads to an arrest. Even if you receive the cash reward, you still will not have to give your name -- only the code number.

You can reach Crime Stoppers anytime by phone at 205-254-7777 or by texting the word "CRIMES" with your tip to 7777.

To send a tip online, go to www.crimestoppersmetroal.com and click on the "submit an online tip" link.

NOTE: You will remain anonymous no matter which method you contact Crime Stoppers. Each tipster receives a private code number, which you can use to claim a cash reward should your tip lead to an arrest. Crime Stoppers cannot call tipsters to testify in court.

Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama is a partnership between local law enforcement, the Birmingham Business Alliance and ABC 33/40. Together, our goal is to make our community a safer place to live and work.
