More than 3,000 people in the state of Alabama signed up for a health insurance plan through the marketplace, a key component of the Affordable Care Act.

Enrollment increased by 18% between October and November. According to numbers released this week by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the total number of applications from Alabama more than doubled from 10,573 at the end of October to 25, 282 at the end of November.

Sonja Smith, the state project coordinator for Enroll Alabama, says she is encouraged by the results and believes the numbers are positive for the state.

Alabamians who completed paper applications during October and November are encouraged to follow up regarding their status. If applicants have not received a phone call or written notification, they can call 1-800-318-2596 to receive an update about their application. Applicants can also check online. In order for one's insurance to be effective on January 1, 2014, applications must be complete by December 23rd.
