Approximately 50 Birmingham high school students gave their time Thursday to make Christmas a little brighter for more than 1,000 families.

The Birmingham Education Foundation partnered with YouthServe to promote student leadership.

Students from Parker, Jackson-Olin, Wenonah and Woodlawn placed hundreds of toys in bags for Toys for Tots at downtown Birmingham's YMCA Youth Center.

"What I hope is I hope that our students realize how much power they have to make a difference even at a young age and how powerful they are when they work together," said J.W. Carpenter, executive director, Birmingham Education Foundation. "I believe that's what they are seeing today."

Other work sites through the partnership Thursday included The Greater Birmingham Humane Society and the Ronald McDonald House.
