Obamacare enrollment on the rise

Posted: Updated:

More Alabamians are enrolling in health insurance under the new Affordable Care Act law, more popularly referred to as Obamacare.

3,448 people selected and enrolled in an insurance plan through the state's insurance marketplace by the end of November, according to The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  This is a significant increase from the 624 people who enrolled in the first month, although this number represents only a small fraction of the state's 675,000 uninsured residents.

Since the insurance marketplace opened on October 1, nearly 10,600 people completed applications in the first month. That number almost doubled in the second month to 25,000.

Birmingham City Councilman Marcus Lundy, Jr. will host a series of town hall meetings next week to inform people about the Affordable Care Act.
