Middle school students raise 28K then spend it for a good cause

Most any child would love to be handed thousands of dollars and let loose into a toy store. Some middle school students had that wish come true while helping fulfill some Christmas wishes for children in need.

Monday afternoon, Oak Mountain Middle School students dumped their loot onto the gym floor. The nearly 29 thousand dollars of toys covered the gym.

"It's really cool. It's really fun," said one student.

It only took them minutes to spend the money.

"It was pretty chaotic," said Clay Holstad, an eighth grader.

"It was really awesome and fun," said Sullivan Smith, an eighth grader.

The really awesome and really cool part? The Monday morning Toys R Us shopping trip was for Toys for Tots and the money in the students' pockets was raised by fellow students.

"They raked their neighbor's yard. They had bake sales. They had garage sales. They begged their neighbors and grandmothers," said Amy Grimes, a seventh grade teacher and drive organizer.

Holstad was one of those students.

"I went around my neighborhood and every door asking people to donate," he said.

One student also help fund the purchases by donating his birthday money.

A total of 28, 640 dollars was raised in just 12 days. It paid for thousands of toys needed this week for children under six years old. The students left Marines with a good problem.

"We have a truck ready to load. This will definitely fill the truck and will probably have to come back for more, so it's great," said U.S. Marine Sgt. Julio Mezamedine.

ABC 33/40 is a sponsor of the Toys for Tots drive.

Please consider donating new, unwrapped toys. They can be dropped off at any Applebee's or Chevy dealership.

Tuesday night, admission into the Comedy Club Stardome for comedy night is free with a Toys for Tots donation. Doors open at 6:15 p.m..
