Birmingham lights up, with more to come

Posted: Updated:

Birmingham's "LightRails" at the 18th Street Railroad Viaduct is lighting up the city with holiday colors. And the special Christmas-themed program is only the beginning. REV Birmingham, the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, and the City of Birmingham are poised to announce funding has been secured for future downtown lighting projects. Remaining lighting projects, including 14th, 20th and 19th Street underpasses, will each have their own unique identity and are scheduled to come online in early 2014.

Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham President Kate Nielsen said, "The Catalyst Fund, which is making this project possible, was set up to fund big ideas that can spark community change. Having these permanent light-art installations in the four major underpasses will build a vital connection between the north and south side of our city center, contributing to its growing vibrancy."

Additional lighting events will be announced in the upcoming year. The holiday colors will run for December only.
